Hello Chaps
I'm about to view a Mk2S for a friend. Not seen the car yet, but got this picture of the motor. How one tells if this is a correct unit?
It says 9F ...something but the tag looks like it's been removed and attached again. I'm no specialist in engines, so is there a way to identify if this is S engine, what to look for ?
Thank you very much!

Re: Mk2S- correct engine?
Should have tappet covers not solid around the back. Should also more than likely have a thin flanged block. Best check also to see what gearbox it's mated to.
I can see that the extra bolt by the thermostat has been replaced by a stud so the chances are the engine has been worked on at some point,

Good of you to find that 11th bolt! Thank you.
Yes, I shall check tappet covers & gearbox once I get to the car. I've tried to instruct photograper, but did not succeed. I'm a bit suspicious, since this was raced immediately after left dealer showroom.

What year Mk2? 9FSAY prefix is correct for 1275 S before late 68 then, 9FXEY after late 68.The fan shown in your photo isn't correct for a mk 2 but that may have been swapped out. It should be a plastic fan for most destinations.Tex1965 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 6:37 am Hello Chaps

The blocks casting numbers on the back should be single AEG312 for most of the Mk2 S blocks then both AEG312 & AEG634 for the later S blocks. Remove the rocker cover to see if the casting numbers on the head is 12G163 for early Mk2 Cooper S then 12G940 for later Mk2. It should also have a 2 piece crank pulley and a cast iron water pump pulley. As far as gearboxes go, they will all have Hardy Spicer output flanges, viewable from above, and Depending on year, the Mk2 S could be fitted with 1 of 3 gearboxes. late 67 Mk1 and some Mk2s have 22A1522. early 1968-mid 68 22A1228 And for the later cars after Oct 68 a 4 synchro box was used with 22G1128. These numbers are cast into the gearbox just behind and slightly to the right of the oil filter There are many details that I haven't pointed out, but these are the "Quick Look" ones. I'm sure the Others here will point out some other details.

It's an early 68 car, Morris, Comission number is 787A (if original), no heritage certificate available to verify. Body number plate (not readable form the pictures) on the right from the bonnet locking plate.

Re: Mk2S- correct engine?
I had the pleasure to view the car, and can confirm it is a real thing. Tappet covers, HS couplings, correct distributor, all dates correct.. Raced and rallied straight away from dealers showroom, until retirement late 70's. Still carries original body (!) 11th headbolt & cooling fan tells about wild youth.
Thank you for your inputs, very valuable.
