Source of 2k Speedwell blue

Post by ads7 »

Could anyone recommend a good supplier of the above?

Google search for 2k paint in speedwell blue (preferred choice of my paint guy) yields just one eBay seller based in Germany

As an aside I was toying with brush painting using Craftmaster enamel which is available in the desired hue for little money, however I'm not fully confident to do the work myself, although I'd like to hear anyone's experience of going this route?

Some paint suppliers will post low voc paints, but you would need to send a sample , as often the old codes don't mix right, if the sample is a few inch square, they can scan it and mix from it.
I use SRS Sheffield.

I think the old Tecaloid brush painting is more for old coach built vintage stuff, but would love to see it done.

TEKALOID........ There's a blast from the past Nick. Hard as nails, sticks like shi......., er...., mud to a blanket providing the surface is clean. Heat resistant to a high degree, simple to thin out and clean and the best of British too.

Once it was applied, then smoothed back, cut and polished, it could come up like glass. But pretty labour intensive.

Where can you get it today? I need to take my engine out over the winter. Chuck it in the trichlorethylene tank and repaint

Just had 1K basecoat of Maroon B mixed by https://coatingsdirect.org/ of Cardiff. They had the Morris colourcode (RD23) on their system. Give them a call and see if they can mix some Speedwell Blue from the BMC colourcode.

How's this for a result? Craftmaster enamel, £150 material costs

If your buying 2k, just find a local reputable paint supplier and buy a good branded paint, max meyer etc.

Avoid cheaper paint suppliers, some horror stories going around of a well known supplier in Birminghams paint not drying properly for weeks.

Have seen several Bugatti GP cars brush painted with Craftmaster then the top coat gloss paint is hand flatted with wet & dry to loose the high gloss & then paint surface is just polished.. proper job for such a car and could be a solution on an early Mini .. perhaps a better final paint finish than a todays we must have 2pack High Gloss with no orange peel & can see your face in it paint job.
ps my cars are in 2pack..

Now that's really got me thinking .. phone call to Craftmaster tomorrow to explore that option!

When I qualified as a painter in the early 90’s they made you do a term of brush painting as part of the 3 year cause..

So .. spoke with Craftmaster . Here are my options for 2k spray Vs hand painting

Spray:
Craftmaster supply speedwell blue in 2k.
2 LTRs topcoat + hardener + primer = £73 then £40 compressor hire and a mate who's done decent amateur spray jobs (I've seen his latest work) £250 labour so total @ £370

Brush paint:
£106 for paint/primer/undercoat and the satisfaction of hopefully doing a great job myself. Downside is if we ever sell the car and the new owner wants to change the colour using 2k for example they'd have to go down to bare metal to be safe for new paint. Potentially that's devaluing the car.

On balance think I may have to go 2k spray route

Are you painting inside and out? .last one's I've done all took between 5 and 7 last unmixed.
If it just the outside I'd still alow for 3lts, as remixing can cause variances in colour.

I always end up with a couple litres left over but buy as one batch initially to, as Nick says, prevent risk of colour differences.

That said, I use cellulose but same potential colour issues.

Usually buy 7 1/2 litres in three 2 1/2 litre tins, mix two lots in a five litre tin. Use other 2 1/2 as base coat and then use 5 litre paint tin for build and final coats.

Probably overkill as mixed in one batch by supplier but better safe than sorry.

Yes best to over order in one batch, I'm just doing visible parts of cabin / boot / engine bay and whole outside not bothering with the whole floor, so will probably get away with 5 litres. Under £500 for a spray job is ok with me.

That said I wouldn't mind testing my brush paint technique using the coach paint inside the boot and engine bay - if it turns out well you never know which direction I might take..guess we're unlikely to sell the car in the foreseeable future as my wife can't bear to part with it, so the question of devaluation might not be as important. Hell it's only a slightly retrofied '86 city anyway.

Mulled it over. I'm going the hand painted route.

Plan is, this will mean the mini is off the road for a few months so we'll have to run our newly acquired mgb which my wife isn't sure she wants to keep but I've got other ideas so driving it about might get her onboard fingers crossed

Will post up finished result late autumn ..
