Oil pressure pipe

Post by WesleyB »

Hi,

Yesterday I have see oil in my dash ... . After looking what the problem is see the oil was coming for the connection to the gauge of my Smith oil pressure. Today everything out and look fo a other pipe, don't have but a friend of me have the tools to make te pipe again good.
A view hours later, 1 nut loosing of the gauge and it works again. After one hour drive it don't leak anymore.
Me happy for the moment.

But I want it better in the future. I know there are electric gauge but I want to stay with oil pressure.
Is it possible with a complete flexible ? Whit type is that ?

and yes, meanwhile I have order a new nut for the gauge :D

Cheers

The eBay one is quite a bit longer, I’d suspect far too long.

There is a cheaper nylon oil pipe lower down on the Mini Spares page, similar to that used on motor bikes such as my Commando. The oil pressures on a mini are relatively low in hydraulic terms so personally speaking I'd suggest not going overboard with this

Mine is a nylon tube. Most generic auto parts shops will sell the same thing

I know it seems so obvious but some restorers seem to forget the fibre sealing washer between line and gauge, assuming the two flat mating surfaces will make the seal. It will for a week, then it'll start to weep as sure as eggs is eggs.

We use a microbore hose at work for our gauges. Looks like bicycle brake outer cable. It can hold ridiculously high pressures (we test them to 7250 psi)

One of my workmates has used one on his Mini for oil pressure line. I’ll see if I can get a photo off him and post it up.

Photo would be good Andy. The difficult part for the average punter is also the weakest link. Connecting the flexi-pipe to the unions.

I wonder is anyone out there in Forumland bleeds the air from the oil pipe before connecting it to the gauge. Nope, I never understand that theory either as, say 80psi is still 80psi pressure whatever. But it was something we had to do as apprentices and on some buffered installations.

The seals between the gauge and line I've seen are rubber washers rather than a fibre washer ... more like and O-ring.

Probably not rubber as such. Something that won't be degraded by mineral oils

Here's a couple pics.

You need an adaptor from 1/8 BSP for the block to -JIC4 male for the -JIC4 female hose end fitting. The same hose end fitting screws straight onto the oil pressure gauge. .

The pics show more adaptors than required as my mate wanted to include an oil pressure light sensor as well.

When I'm back at work, would be simple to make these u. ;)
