Rally car height - next decision (sump guard)

Post by AndyPen »

I 'may' fit my sump guard as seen in my other thread at some points, and I think our car was raised with washers on the trumpets back in the rally days. What with all the speed bumps we have to enjoy these days I am just pondering how close a guard would be to some of these monster speed bumps? Would I even get over them without getting caught?

Any experiences to share folks? It is the good old 'battleship' sump guard that ST supplied.

my car is fitted with a heavy duty ex rally dural sump guard & Car seems to get over our local speed humps .. but then i usually go one wheel around the edge of the Humps such as inside wheel is in the Gutter.
The advantage of a good SumpGuard is it is so easy to Trolley Jack up the front of the Car. ;)

Depends if you are going to hit the rough stuff

I set our car at standard ride height - a bit of a compromise between tarmac handling and the rough stuff and have never had a problem with speed humps at the front, it is normally the exhuast that gets it. It is fitted with an alloy one though, not one of them steel anchors.

Agree. Scottish sump guard for the Welsh forests, Paddy Hopkirk style for speed humps :?:

Although the usual full-width-of-the-road road humps don't affect my car with normal ride height suspension, what do cause concern are those dark red coloured raised square type, set as a unit into the centre of each lane in the road road. You know the sort......., that you can straddle. Alas, you don't straddle them too quickly if your car is lowered to any degree. Especially a mini!

Nice looking tweed grey car there Dave

Good to see a few undersides ;-)

The consensus seems to be what I hoped, that I can cope ;-)

I still have the dural one as well but there is something about these guards that just seem right for the period. You don't see many on cars, and we all probably know why ;-)

Re: Rally car height - next decision (sump guard) - updated

Just a quick update in case anyone else out there has this sump guard.

The rear mounts are actually Morris Oxford, and are readily available. I got these (silver in pic) ones from ang-classiccarparts on ebay, but others supply them too. I chose these as the metal appeared sturdier and have had good experiences with this company. The triumph ones are still in the pic and could work as well, but these are a rectangle mount with more rubber.
