Wet front subframe tower bolts

Post by rogerotto66s »

I have checked numerous available sources with no definitive answer.

On my wet front subframe (66 S) it appears the tower bolts do not have a washer.
The retainer for the displacer plastic sleeve seems to serve that purpose.

Although when I removed the subframe years ago I do recall removing flat washers.

So... washers .. yes or no?

Never seen washers, or, lock washers, just the various plates, that serve both functions........

My '66 S has flat washers on top of the retaining plates.

The parts manual shows 53k3721 ‘Belleville’ washers that appear to be conical shakeproof washers.

I’ve put flat washers on my car like Jay has.

Am I imagining it or did the plate (that retains the plastic thinggies) have little tab that you could bend against a flat of the long bolt that goes through into the tower

The dry cars have plates like that Peter but not the wet cars ... not sure why ?!

My car has never been apart until I took it apart. It's a 68 Austin Cooper S in Canada.
The tower bolts came with "Belleville" washers only. The impression can be seen in the photo. I also have photos (somewhere) showing this setup prior to disassembly. The washers are not flat, they are Belleville domed compression washers.

Belville washers....... yes....... The only time that I can ever recall them being used in my limited engineering life from the 60's to date was on the rear of a machine that vibrated like a Kango hammer and a mount that fitted to a helicopter.

Just spoke to a friend who also used them and he says that they were supposedly a locking method where the idea was good - but flawed in practice. He changed that to read '...not a good locking idea and proven so in practice.....' . So take your pick

The washers I had on my WET “S” so appear to be the conical type.

Only reference I find for part # 53K3721 is in the MKII manual (AKD 5104) for DRY suspension.

Nothing in AKD 3509 for a Cooper S.

Any AKD manual for WET MK1s?

A few of my tower bolts do not look good.
I would like to replace them.

My bolts are 3 7/8” in length (ignore head) and have WILEY on the head along with the letter S.

Does the S translate to grade 2,5 or 8?

MiniSpares says to use HBZ534 which is 4 1/4” in length.

Another source says to use the DRY bolt 21A90/21A0090.

What are the proper specs?
What is the proper part number?

Wiley S on mine. 3 7/8" shank length, and 4 1/8" overall. With the threaded section being only 1/2"

My experiences of Belvill Washers are to keep a tension on a Bolt where vibration can overcome any other type of Bolt locking washer .,.Also if to use two Belvill Washers inverted so they form a Cone shape & you create a spring effect and by increasing the number of Belvill Washers in aline & you create a Longer Spring Effect & that will take considerable loading in heavy engineering such as BMC Press Tools that made Mini Panels.. yes just another load of useless crap information but you did mention Belvill Washers.

Just to add to the confusion, my 65/66 wet subframe uses studs not bolts. It seems that the Morris versions often used these for some reason.

Still looking for a few Belleville washers.

Thanks Whistler.

I did see this company.
I also see Fastenal carries these washers.
I will be stopping by this week to check them out for the washers and the bolts.
