Fitting MK1 Windows

Here are a few views on fitting MK1 Window glass.

First good idea is to dry fit everything BEFORE you sikaflex everything up.

Fit upper rubber to door frame, making sure the glass slides easily, the rubber can get kinked in the corners. Fit bottom rubber to metal bottom runner retainer. This is where you need more than 2 hands. Fit glass to top rubber, then holding the glass in position fit the bottom rubber runner & retainer to the bottom edge of the glass. Holding everything together, slide the bottom rubber & retainer into position in the door. Jiggle around a bit and make sure the windows open & close as they should. Slide the back window forward and drill a small hole through the bottom rubber & retainer into the door frame for a small screw. You can usually get one in the back edge then 1 in the front of the back window. Slide the windows right back & repeat for the front window. I find it helpful marking the position of the screws on the door until I have finished. When all this has been done. Dismantle, put a thin bead of sikafles where you feel it should go & re assemble.

I would offer three suggestions.

Fit the glass with the door upside down.

Before fitting anything mark the metal bridges across the drain channel in the top of the door. Unless you do it now its too easy to try to screw the retaining screws into fresh air....

Don't use anything that has to be squeezed out of a tube to seal the channel. It will set like a glue and make subsequent removal impossible. You can still buy the old plasticene style sealant (dumdum) that will stay flexible and seal pretty much for ever - and doesn't stick to anything.

i fit screens "sealerless" then rub dum dum putty all round the glass to rubber joint ,,working well in,then washing the excess off with white spirit or petrol
as you wash the excess off with a solvent rag,it flows the dum dum intop the places it didnt reach when you rubbed it in
ive never had any screen leaks this way

another tip

once you have drilled the holes for the retaining screws, remover the bottom parts and make sure you have removed all the swarf from the drilling - this will ensure that you dont get any rusty stains

dum dum is also good ,for sealing these ,and makes future removal much easier too
for my sins,i own a 1957 wolsleley 1500

useful, more or less the way I did it,
but what are the exact type of Sikaflex you use, or where to find the plasticene DumDum you mention ?
I still have to unfit my windows and seal the retaining rail ...
