KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
Hello Guys
I'm struggling to fit my KAD gearstick on my Cooper mk1
Does anyone have ever experienced this and have some pics ?
Or maybe fitting instructions?
Thank you
Charles

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
If I'm not mistaken they only make them as a replacement for the anti rattle type gear lever. That would mean you would need to convert to that set up to fit the KAD setup
Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
I've got a KAD quick shift on my 72 remote 22G1128 box, no issues.
I dont know what the difference is with the earlier remotes.

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
Charles,
I had the exact same problem. I bought a Quickshift kit many years ago and when I went to fit it on my 1128 remote box I could not see any way to fit it using the parts they supplied. It was as if the parts did not fit. I struggled with it for a few days and then gave up on it. The kit I had was supposed to fit remote shift boxes but nothing made any sense.

This evening I'll take some pictures of the way mine is assembled for my mk2

Hello Guys
It's fitted as pictures but the second gear is not ok..
I refit the original Gearlever at the moment..
I understood that a lot of you, had troubles with KAD Quickshift?
By the way the car is almost ready to start..

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
Mine fitted straight in ..(noting that this must have been done 20 odd years ago). The only issue I can recall is that the nylon (?) cup like bush that the lower end of the shift lever sits in has a smaller hole that the standard socket.
Otherwise its a simple "assembly is the reverse....."
Cheers, Ian

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
fitted the KAD shift ( the type with the Blue spacer ) along with a light coil spring fitted under the nylon lower ball cup .. seems that some remotes had this push upwards anti rattle spring & other cars did not have the spring as OE?.. with a light coil spring in position Kad shift seems to work for me.
I was also surprised at the amount of side wear seen on the Ball end of the vertical shift shaft that is located in the remote type diff housing.. this is the Ball that locates into the U shape remote selector shaft.. lucky i had another shaft as they do not seem to be spare part available.
I remember the past discussion that the Quickshifts cause early wear with in the gearbox ?

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
Hi ... another frustrated KAD remote quick shift owner here ... There seems to be no way to assemble it as described , ie using the nylon washer , spring , spacer and cap from the original .as it compresses the spring completely and impossible to shift gear . Are there radically different versions of the remote shifter ? Mine is on a 69 cooper. Back to the old lever for now it seems
Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
No issues fitting it to my 72 remote. Fitted exactly the same as a standard lever, just with the additional spacer added.

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
The measurements on the new one just don't seem right to me . Length from bottom of the nylon bush to the top edge of the pivot ball is about 21mm longer than the standard one , but the extra spacer is only 16mm thick ? so there is an extra 5mm over the original one that's not taken up by the spacer ? I called KAD and gave them the measurements and they say they are within their tolerances . So i guess i must be doing something wrong
Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
Just had another look at my KAD lever, my lever measures the same as yours.
The lower ball sits deeper in to the cup in the remote linkage than the standard one does- increasing leverage ratio. The upper pivot ball protrudes above the replacement spacer approximately the same amount that the standard lever ball sits above the remote housing cup. The spring and split washer then sits on top of the pivot ball within the original spacer so I can't see why your spring is binding when you bolt the top plate down.

Thanks for checking the measurements on yours . So it does look like i am doing something wrong then. Perhaps the nylon cap isnt sitting all the way into the linkage cup ? .. ill have another look at it over the coming days .

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
I fitted this KAD shifter to my 1970 Mini K1100 remote shifter. I fitted it correctly and found it was difficult to select 1st gear always. Adjusted clutch etc. etc. I finally removed it replaced all the bushes and plastic original parts and refitted the original shifter. It works beautifully. I dont know too many people who have liked these. Think that KAD model is remote shifter only too.
best regards,
Leigh

On a synchro box I believe they can overthrow the synchro & cause premature wear....Polarsilver wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 9:47 am I remember the past discussion that the Quickshifts cause early wear with in the gearbox ?
Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
I think the term quick shift is a little misleading, it's really a short shift. I suppose it does potentially allow you to shift more quickly and potentially damage the box but the standard remote shift in good condition is a nice feeling quick and positive shift anyway.
The KAD quick shift makes for a really short shift when all the rest of the slop is removed from the rest of the linkage but the force required to move the lever is increased. It's quite clunky at slow shift speeds but a real sweet satisfying shift when pressing on a bit.
My lever only moves 1" between neutral and any gear and only 3/4" across the gate (lever is shortened over a standard KAD one). A reverse gear lock out lever is probably beneficial.

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
Minisprinter....... You've got it in one! Raises the fulcrum and therefore shortens the movement. But like all things in engineering and physics, especially leverage, you get 'owt for nowt

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
Shortens the movement at one end and therefor lengthens it at the other.
However as the 'stops' haven't changed then it shouldn't overthrow, unless you're ham-fisted with it and start to strain the mechanisms.

Re: KAD Quickshift on remote gearbox
I find the main benefit of my quikshift is that it moves the lever closer to where your hand normally rests on the steering wheel (especially when you've made the other adjustments to improve the Minis driving position.
After 30 odd years I could not actually say its done any real damage the gearbox.
Cheers, Ian
