Re: what is this seal?
As Daz says, inner wing mud deflector seal off early cars. Or that's what it claims to be.

Re: what is this seal?
No, on these early cars there is a shield that goes on the back of the wheel arch that stops water & crap going down the back of the wheel arch, round the hinge area.
The clean part shows where the plate would go. the seal goes between the wing & the plate.

I believe those were a Dealer installed option, rather than an Early car feature........We had some in Canada......

Re: what is this seal?
MGB's also had these shields fitted from new at the factory and as I recall, before paint. So you got the car, that had already started to rust behind the protective plate - that didn't fit particularly well in any case. Thereafter, road crap and shi......, er......, more salty crap got blasted around the edges and behind the protective plates until the inevitable happened. Yep...., the sills rusted out from the front and the rear of the front wings rusted out from halfway down the swage/join line.
I say it through gritted teeth but BMG/BL/Rover never learned. Even on the last Rover Mini, they were not painted under the top and bottom part of the boot or bonnet hinges. What a farce...........

"Body colour inner wheel arch guards (deflector plates) were factory fitted to all 59 cars from Morris chassis number 6481– Austin also introduced later, but no number change available but thought to be a similar number. Before this they were retro fitted via a service memorandum"
Our early 1961 CKD cars still had them here in Australia.
