Mk1/2 Lockheed Brake Servo - kits

Post by Forsweld »

I am currently restoring a 1969 Mk2 Cooper S and I am having difficulty with the Lockheed air valve in that I am missing its contents (filter, spring, rubber valves). There does not appear to be available for sale any air valve units (and small diaphragms) on the internet EXCEPT those found on the Alfa sites for the Bendix/Bonaldi units...such as the BR007 kit from ClassicAlfa.com in the UK who have the gold zinc plated air valve unit and diaphragm in a kit, which looks absolutely identical to that of the Lockheed.

Will these Bonaldi kits work/fit on the Lockheeds?

Any assistance or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. That is the SSB1036 which is the major kit for the 5/8" slave but does not include anything for the air valve. The air valve part I am referring to is this...

The Bonaldi units were used by Innocenti on their Coopers, as I understand it they are completely identical to the Lockheeds as they were made under license by Bonaldi/Benditalia.
Of course I know what a dipstick is, you get called something often enough you look it up!

Think the Alfa valve is the same as Lockheed.

I would be interested to know where to get the valve (or its 2 rubber seals) that is opperated by the pointy bit of the diaphragm.

To answer Minikin, the pair of seals within the air valve are not available on their own which I have concluded after hours of exhaustive searching on my part. The major kit SSB1036 does not include them unfortunately. I believe you have to by the complete air valve assembly (with filter, spring, valve seals) and small diaphragm (with the “pointy thing” as you call it) as a kit for the Bonaldi servo from the Alfa parts suppliers in the UK and they are not cheap at £95. I just ordered one so I’m crossing my fingers hoping it will work on the Lockheed servo.

If my mind serves me right, these two small seals are for the valves "pointed" end. There are two because the bore they seal come in two different sizes, depending on spec.

The valve on my bonaldi unit had two seals - they where in a just about useable condition (I hope I will not be proved wrong) - I have many spare seals of other sizes, which came with a repair kit I bought (that was incomplete on one hand, and overly coimplete on other parts).

Hence I#d like to have some of the small seals. one is a flat rubber washer and the other is the dished shape one. I am not not yet prepared to pay something like 100€ for it.

some 25 years ago I used to have a brake specialist, who made such seals from scratch. Cannot remember his name and probably he's not alive anymore either. :-/

OK. This is the Lockhed one and it only has one seal for the valve. 32 is a plunger and 31 is the seal :) But the seal comes in two different sizes, thats why when you buy a service kit it comes with both sizes :)

I agree. Of the 2 small seals (#31) in the kit for the #32 plunger/piston, one is for a 5/16” bore (which is for our Minis) while the other is for a 3/8” bore (a non-Mini application).

Yes, and both small seals come in the original kit
