Boot petrol pipe area - what's this stuff?

Post by AndyPen »

I am just looking at the floors of my S and the '64 'original'.

The rear hole appears to be for the petrol pipe and the wiring and breather come down the other hole. Is there a grommet behind the wiring hole and what is this black stuff. I seem to recall using something called dum dum, but is there anything 'modern'? Andy ideas welcome please ;-)

I remember Dum Dum... my dad had a large reel of it for years, bought in the 1970's from an electrical factor IIRC. Electricians used it for weather-sealing conduit ends - so maybe Mark would know what's used in the trade these days?

3M strip caulk is claimed to be a modern equivalent:

Amalgamating insulation tape would be a good alternative

Does that old AMALGAMATING TAPE still exist? If you want a blob of Gum-Gum Andy, just ask. We used to call it gutta-persha. The stuff we had sticks like shi......, er, mud to a blanket!

S391 "dog shit" will certainly do the job, it is very similar to Dum Dum, but is of a brownish hue, not black.

Personally I use black or grey CT1 for most of these jobs nowadays. I have had great results in many jobs like this. It is more like silicon sealer than putty in consistency though.
