Synchro hubs - correct orientation during reassembly..

Post by gs.davies »

Help needed! I can’t find any references etc the correct orientation of the synchro hubs beyond the helpful hint to put them back the same way as they came apart 😂

In both synchro, the control hub has a protruding part. Should this go towards clutch or output pinion? And once that’s established, which way are the ‘collars’ on them biased? To the front or back?

Here’s how mine are configured at the moment, bear in mind due to hamfistedness during mainshaft removal they did end up pinging their springs and balls all over the place 🙄

I think that 3rd 4th is the wrong way round.
Always point the most protruding side of the centre towards the outside of the gearbox.

So.. mainshaft assembled should look like this?

There does seem to be a lot of free movement on the first and second hub though. That’s with the protruding party of the central facing outwards..

As for the free movement, reversing the first gear bearing journal removes it but that seems to be the opposite of what the diagram in the manual shows..

I presume this is wrong..

Sorry, I didn’t explain fully. The 3rd/4th hub is miss assembled. The centre is fitted back to front.
The ‘top hat’ of both the centre and the outside ring of each hub should face towards the outside of the gearbox.

The 1st/2nd hub and gear will be loose until its tightened up to the main bearing.
That 1st/2nd synchro hub centre however is oriented correctly.
It’s the one that’s easiest to get wrong because the difference in height between the two sides of the inner is only a couple of millimetres.

I remember it as - wide to wide to outside

ie wider protrusion of the inner goes to the same side as the wider outer portion of the outer, then that side of the assembly goes towards the outside of the gearbox.

Thanks for all your help again.

I pulled the shaft back out because I realised id put the first gear journal in the wrong way round and therefore against the laygear, the gears didn’t line up..

Think I’ve got it right now. At last 😂
