Re: Fitting Twin SUs, manifold first or all together?
another tip is to pack the void area under Carbs & inlet manifold with Rag .. then when i drop the Nut or the Return Spring that will otherwise somehow jam behind the subframe.. instead the Rag catches it ..and when i do remove the Rag to then hear something another rattles away as it will have probably fallen onto that Rag

Glad it's not just me then! Wish I'd asked before doing it. Might have saved a few swear words and cut hands. When fishing about for a dropped manifold nut, the split pin on the side of the remote went right under my little finger nail - agony!Peter1071 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 9:03 pmI've recently rebuilt my H4s and on re-fitting as a fully assembled unit, dropped the last manifold nut down the back. Three times. First time, neatly into the remote housing, jammed. Only solution was to remove sump guard and remote. Second time, same thing but had thought to leave sump guard and remote off of course. Third time, despite being the long brass nut, it managed to jam itself neatly inside a drive shaft coupling which then had to be dismantled to remove it. It's all back together now and I can see the funny side but at the time the thought that got me through was that at least it hadn't fallen into the engine.Polarsilver wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 9:39 am Tape over the open Hole positioned on top of the remote adaptor (if car has a remote gearchange ) Tape stops falling washers etc entering the remote adaptor.. Then with nice free running manifold stud threads use "Copper Slip" this will be a big advantage when you come to remove the Carb /manifold setup.![]()

It is 30 degree inlet manifold but I do have some spacers to clear the maniflow exhaust manifold for the spring location cross member on the heat shield so most likely this, i do remember it wasn't much but as always just enough to prevent it clearing

I have always done them all together & wouldn't do them any other way.

I don't think there's any right or wrong way, just what you're comfortable with, what tools you have to work with and how many double joints you have in your elbows, wrists and fingers.
Personally, I found it easier to build up 1-1/4's on the car and 1-1/2's to fit assembled.

Re: Fitting Twin SUs, manifold first or all together?
I do it both ways, depending on the situation.......
One thing that helps when doing them assembled on the manifold, is, the put the nuts and washers on first (just a turn and a half or so), and, just, slide the manifold down onto the studs between the head and the washers....on the manifolds with the half hole in them, I cut off the lower ear (it's not needed, as, the manifold rests on the upper ear only).....
On the ones with spigots, it's touch and go whether the manifold will slide in or not.....On these heads, I usually install 1/4" longer studs on the four inner ones, then, the whole assembly drops right in no problem.....
