Most comfortable period seat ?

Post by Metronick »

What’s generally accepted as the most comfortable and supportive period correct aftermarket seat for a mk1 ?

I’m putting together a car (with Safety Devices cage) to use on some long trips and suffer with a bad back with a seat with poor lumbar support, any first hand experience and advice from fellow sufferers gratefully received

Thanks

Nick

Factory recliners

Only problem with them is they are heavy and expensive

Ok thanks, sounds promising, can you post a pic & do they fit a car with a cage ?
Cheers

Contour 6 is the most comfy drivers seat i have ever used and it fits with my Cage .. other than i have some ex W&P mk1 Recaro,s which are my choice for distance driving in a GT without a Cage .
If you want Rear Seat access get a Microcell Recliner as it double folds forward & does fit with my Cage.
Think the choice of Seat issue is the "size" of the Driver/Passenger and where you will Drive your Car and length of that drive time ..and the amount you want to pay out cos none are cheap..

Repro contour6 . I run two sets one in mk 1 fabric lines across , mk2 lines vertical to match rear seats, came from eBay( Works Escort User name) subframes inc Around £1000 to just had to alter the front hinge bracket and cut about 1 inch off rear legs to get another lower and then felt right

Hi Nick
Seat comfort on LONG trips is something I have considered very carefully. When we went to Italy in 2019 we drove for miles & miles and miles without stopping often enough. The pain in the a**e was terrible and made much worse as, with full harness belts, there was very little wriggle room. I also have used Sparco high back seats which are not really comfortable enough for long trips and restrict access to the rear seat. You mentioned roll cage, will it include door bars?
Suggest low back reclining/folding seats with headrests. My latest seats are Contour which seem comfortable but time will tell.
Good luck on you search.

Thanks that’s really useful, is there any chance of a photo?

Hi Cliff, that’s really useful, thanks.
I’ve no door bars fitted.
Could I trouble you for a photo of the Contours?
Cheers

I had Restall Type 1s in smooth vinyl and didn’t find them that comfy but depends on your build, they did also get very sweaty on the back . The ambla type are better in that respect. I also tried out a works style fibreglass bucket and despite the lack of padding found that super comfy. Car Hood Co high backs also. I also find a Karobes covered std seat a lot more comfortable that it sounds!

I bought the seats for my Inno from a guy who had fitted Mk1 Restalls in his car in lieu of the original Inno seats. He urged me to try them because they were "sooo much better". I wasn't too impressed to be honest. A bit flat for my liking, I find the Innocenti seats much more comfortable; though they are unsuitable for the period seat requested by the OP as they weren't introduced until the 70s.

I've driven my Rover RCSport-500 to Dusseldorf and back several times, stretching its legs a bit. Break on the ferry or shuttle of course plus fuel and bog stops. I'm getting on a bit but quite slim and find the RCS seats quite pleasant. Mind you, I'm not sure how they'd feel if I was of 'salad dodging' size. Yep, they seem quite comfy for an 800 mile day trip with a couple of stops
