Sun visor

Post by davidmuir »

Hi, This is a sun visor from my '67 Morris 850. It's very floppy and falls down all the time. There is a steel rod going right through to either fixing-not seen any on the suppliers websites the same. Is it for a special market/year only?
Thanks

Just had a good look at this and realise I'm talking rubbish! End fixings slot into the tube inside visor (pictured clearly on new Somerfordmini site). Anyone successfully split the plastic visor and 're-uphostered' the foam inside??
(correct visor for '65 onwards)

I had considered slitting the seam between the hinges for access for mine but did't need to in the end.

Then my usual way of fixing plastic like that (once split!) is to glue a strip to the inside surface of one side, then when set, use impact adhesive to seal to the other side (again on the inside surface).

Presumably you slit it along the original seam and not along the 'top'?

Yes, and the only benefit of doing it between the hinges is that that side is out of sight more, at least when they are up.

Unless it fouls the hinges?

I have done the earlier type by squeezing expanding foam in through a nozzle - going in where the rods enter.

The first time was luck and the second a disaster because it over expanded. Two pieces of smooth timber to make a clamp solved that, along with more staged add-ins of the foam. Bit tricky, but this was in the 90s, and it is still solid to this day.

Oh, and I washed it out first as the orange dust was everywhere. Dried out carefully too.

The washing may have been your saviour.

I was advised by the tech dept of an expanding foam company to spray water in first as it cause faster curing and less expansion.
