Small Bore headaches

Post by Peter1071 »

I have a 998cc Elf project. I thought I'd use an interesting modified original type 629 head. This was reconditioned but was found to have a crack running through one of the inlet seats! I had another similarly modified 629 head which didn't fair much better! After the minimum of work to the face to get it flat it has broken through quite a bit at the back. My questions are, has any one had any success using any kind of block seal, added to the water, to seal up a cracked head? Anyone recognise who might have done the original modifications from the numbers stamped on them?
I thought my small bore days were over so got rid of my 295 heads a while ago but I do have a 206 head left which I could have rebuilt. The block is bored out +60, flat top pistons, AEA630 cam and distributor rebuilt by Martin Jay to 998 Cooper specification.

Thanks,

Peter

I tried a ceramic sealant. It worked for all of a week! Waste of a good head gasket.

That head that has broken into the water jacket is dead. Its had so much machined off it that its now scrap metal.
Reco the 206 head, that will be far better than anything else you have.

Nice looking heads apart from the problems. Out of interest what are the valve sizes in the cracked head?

On one Moking Event back in 2012, it was held in Perth and there was a 'delegation' from the Eastern States that traveled the 4000 km over and back.

On the way over, one guy had trouble which turned out to be a cracked head. We put it back together and with nothing to loose at that point, we put Chemiweld in the cooling system, with a vein hope of him getting it to Perth, then putting it on a Train back home (He worked for the railways). It worked right away, he drove in to Perth, participated in all the events, then to our dismay, headed off with a mate taking the very long way home over about 2 weeks. He got home OK and drove his Moke every day there after for over 18 months before pulling that engine out (an 1100) to fit a 1275 - and not because of the cracked head.

I looked up Chemiweld and wasn't surprised at what I found. It's sodium silicate or waterglass if you want to look it up. It's been used in this sort of application for a hundred years if not longer. It's a great way to save porous castings.

The inlets are 1 7/32" so the same as a 206 or 295. The exhausts measure 1 1/8"
