Mini tyre speed rating for mini Mk1’s

Just wondering does any one know what speed rating that mini Mk1 left the factory with ?

Camac do a 145 r10 82n

Is that suitable for a mini ?

Did tyres have speed ratings then? The speed rating system is based on Km/h, each letter increase the rating by 10.

By the way an N rated tyre is for maximum speeds of 87mph.


And a load rating of 82 is 475kg.

If they didn’t then Is 82n acceptable is there is no mention on the side wall of kg weight ?

The kerb weight of a Mk1 is approximately 600kg. Add a couple of average people and a bit of luggage and the weight soon goes upto 800kg. An 82 rated tyre would be fine as it is load per tyre (or 950kg per axle).

Well that would depend on who is pulling the trailer.

Personally I wouldn't even use the Camac tyres on a trailer. They are a cheap and nasty tyre which don't last very long before going out of shape in my experience.

The other posters are pointing out that this is not really a good tyre & what's more, it is so poor they wouldn't fit it to a trailer, let alone a MK1 Mini.

Camac's are made here in Portugal, sadly i must agree this would be my last choice as mini tyre, no grip , very hard rubber that perishes very quickly...
The 15.20 10 are probably the only ones acceptable in a stock 850 .

Back in the 60s even radial retreads (such as what us students could afford:) were a better bet than cross-plies...

for originality reasons... i can't think of an early 850 without 5.20 10 tyres.
And along with Camacs i don't think there are many other options.

Last year I fitted 145 CAMAC on my '67 850. I live 10 miles to CAMAC plant, so I picked them in factory freshly made. After wheel refurb I managed to mount them tubeless!
Got 145 instead of ply 5.20 mostly because price (145 cost 45 euros and for 5.20 they were asking 80 euros).
Aestetically they are perfect for any 60' car, only Dunlop are better.
Quality wise I found todays rubber mix to be super soft (kind of winter tyre softness), not hard as a rock as before (I think they were made like that because here in Portugal we were so cheap that our main goul when we were purchasing a tyre was how long it would last - and trust me CAMAC thread never wore).
Dinamically I found them to be unsharp in hard cornering, but super comfortable as the car came from a 20 year old ply 5.20 CAMAC. Wet weather still not tested.
I think is a tyre you should consider on a non sport or fast road oriented car.

If someone is after a cross-ply: Heidenau have a 4.80-10 in their classic range. Heidenau make superb tyres - probably not so well known over the pond and channel.
