How dangerous were 3 lane roads? I remember a VERY near miss on a family holiday!

You're right. The old three lane roads with a "no mans land" (or everymans land!) centre were highly dangerous - particularly as many drivers and passengers weren't wearing seatbelts at the time. There were some horrible accidents. They were probably almost as dangerous as the mad "Smart" Mororways :x

I only remember one three lane type road and that was on the A420 at Besselsleigh near Oxford. They used to say the lanes were designated NEARside, OFFside and SUIcide. The A420 was always one of those roads to a shorter life.

The A40 between Witney and Oxford was another 3 lane road fairly close to you Peter. Dreadful accident record.
