Re: My new project - 1965 Morris Cooper S - HOY 500D
Little more progress recently but the crap weather is really slowing things down, as well as the inability to pay a visit to the parts department to get a few little bits and pieces.
After a lot of searching, I found some E10 compliant hose in both 1/4 and 5/16 ID, NOT 6 and 8mm. The 5/16 hose is supposed to be completely Ethanol proof at any level and the 1/4 is E10 proof.
Using the braiding salvaged from the electricians scrap bin and some caps bought from eBay, I have made up the rear braided hoses, and added a couple pieces heat shrink to the tank to pump hose, where it passes through the boot floor. I have some of the original, unobtainable, fuel hose clips at plating but had a few new ones to use. The ones commonly available are too wide, especially on the pump spouts.
So the fuel tank is finally fitted, with the drain plug tube and original rubber seal. Fuel pump works ... for now !
Still working on the powder blue carpet but coming along nicely. Got some original grey seat sliders to fit to the rear carpet once I decide on which rivets/fasteners to use. I added some hessian on the back to make it look more original. Once I can get to the local trimmer, I'll finish cutting the front carpet so he can sew up the centre vertical cut and add the heel mat.
You'll have seen that I have recently taken delivery of the new Yokohama GT Special tyres, to fit to the LP882's I'm going to get powder coated, not in OEW, but a more creamier, and arguably more correct colour, similar to Land Rover Limestone.
Hoping to get the engine painted soon so I can drop that in, which will be a big bit out of the way in the garage !

Thanks Jeremy.
Yeah, the tank scrubbed up well
Ordered the paint today for the engine so better make a bit of room to get the engine crane in and get it finished off and prep'd for paint.

Top work as usual!
Andrew, do you have an RAL code for the limestone? I’ve only been able to find one but it’s unconfirmed.
Everywhere else just supplies enamel paint which I don’t want to use.

It's been suggested that RAL1015 Light Ivory is closest to LRC007 Limestone, which I subsequently found a reference to on a Land Rover website. I know that RAL1015 has been used by at least one forumer for years.mini_surfari wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 9:53 am Top work as usual!

Trouble is, if you Google Image ANY colour, the differences are unbelievable I found on a Land Rover forum, some pictures of wheels done in Limestone and two pictures, two totally different colours !!
I'm waiting to hear back that the PC can do RAL1015

That’s the code I’ve been given also Andrew, so atleast we’re all singing off the same sheet .
Yeah the variation does seem dramatic, but I suppose it’s no different to ‘standard’ mini wheel colours in period. Aslong as they’re not as white as OEW, I think it’s a safe bet.

Excellent work Andrew, do you know if all tanks had that drain tube?
My tank just has a brass screw.

I'm not entirely sure Dan if I'm honest.
I'll have a look into the parts books and see.
It is a right bugger to tighten up. I an going to get two deep 3/8 drive sockets and weld them together, to nip the drain up.

It’s easier to just use a brake bleed nipple and add a length of bleed hose if it’s blocked with crud your going to have to unscrew the whole thing any way and poke it with a bit of wire. Petrol up your nose to be expected.Andrew1967 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 5:40 pm

That's basically all the original pipes are, a bleed nipple with a piece of pipe brazed to it.
I don't plan on using it much, its there for aesthetics more than anything. Be a right messy job if I did as you say.

spent the last hour reading the entire project from start to where you are now - amazing job Andrew, which echoes everyone else's comments.
My donor shell for my 1071 180LOB, which i dragged out of a scrapyard was as bad as yours, but the lads at Old Skool Minis in Brum had the headache of steel fighting that.
Hat off to you!

Thanks Martin and yes, after seeing the pics, it was on par with HOY's shell. Well done for getting it back on the road.
Lucky to find Mk1 shell in a scrapyard so recent. All the old scrapyards have gone round here. I kick myself not for not rescuing a '59 out of Medlers scrapyard when it closed.

Re: My new project - 1965 Morris Cooper S - HOY 500D
Another milestone today .. painted the engine/box.
After deliberation I opted for 2k.
2k etch primer used first and once dry went over with the green. Had to get some heat in the garage and around the engine. All seems good at the moment.
The thermostat housing, heater tap and starter mounting flange are just masking blanks as easier to do this than try to use just tape, although I did mask then as well.
Could now fit the power unit except I'm waiting for the callipers to come back from the platers. Need to rebuild them and fit the brake hoses on to them so I can correct fit the hoses onto the subframe, then the pipe and fittings etc. So much easier to do with the engine out.
Got the original belts at FDTS for reconditioning and the original grille slats at ACF Howell for re-chroming. 1071bob made me up some new outer mounting plates for the grille. Top job by Bob, as usual .
A mate is setting up a vapour blasting business and is going to do the carbs for me and then I'll rebuild them and I'm nor considering how to finish the original type S exhaust manifold,

Thanks Alistair
Apart from the machining work, yes, I've rebuilt the engine and box myself.

Will you be taking it back to show the first owner? That'd be something.
