Austins were mostly bolts, Morrises were mostly studs.....but, there was some crossover of that......nothing to do with wet or dry......

Dry subframes have a 3/8 Unf hole with stepped down to 5/16 studs.bwaminispeed wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 1:13 am Austins were mostly bolts, Morrises were mostly studs.....but, there was some crossover of that......nothing to do with wet or dry......
Hydro subframes have 5/16 Unf holes with 5/16 bolts.
Later subframes of course had the big single bolt.
So you are saying Austins had bolts with dry subframes?
So they had 3/8 bolts?
Can you provide evidence of this please?
I have worked on a number of Mk1 Austin Minis and own a 64 Austin van. They have all had studs dry or bolts wet.
I have never seen a 3/8 bolt screwed into a dry subframe, but I am willing to see evidence on it happening.

Re: Front Sub frame bolts or studs
Got me thinking.........I have seen 3/8 " bolts with a locktab on dry subframes.
The bolts had a wide groove machined on the shank below the head.
Somebody on here must have a picture.

Re: Front Sub frame bolts or studs
This would be for UK built cars, Longbridge (Austin) used bolts, Cowley (Morris) used studs.....
Probably different for OZ built cars......

Re: Front Sub frame bolts or studs
60 Morris has studs
64 Austin has bolts
65 Morris Cooper S has bolts, but guess Cooper / S will as they were all built at Longbridge.
68 Morris Cooper has bolts .. as above

Austin bolts , morris studs .
Yes, Australian cars are unique but we do have a number of UK built cars here. It seems lots of them have been imported from the UK over the years and in recent times, Vans, Pickups and Elfs/Hornets are coming across from New Zealand.

850man,
To add one more data point, my Nov 63 Austin has (original I believe) studs.

Re: Front Sub frame bolts or studs
Was it the dry or hydro car that had the spacer between the subframe tower and crossmember?

Re: Front Sub frame bolts or studs
Early CKD Austrlian assembled Morris cars used the bolts shown here. They also used the early lock tabs shown. I own 2 Morris cars with these one is a 1960 CKD 850 and the other a 1962 Cooper. Australian CKD assembled cars used all of the UK supplied mechanical and body parts. Paint and trim was Australian based.goff wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 5:40 pm850man , Evidence , take a look at the bolts with 3/8 die on , you learn everyday , don't forgot the UK made BMC mini first and your just got the l 997 Coopereft overs850man wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 3:35 amDry subframes have a 3/8 Unf hole with stepped down to 5/16 studs.bwaminispeed wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 1:13 am Austins were mostly bolts, Morrises were mostly studs.....but, there was some crossover of that......nothing to do with wet or dry......

Austin bolts , morris studs .
Later subframes (circa 1963) were supplied with studs and a different lock tab which had a grommet in the centre allowing access for the cone compressor.

Re: Front Sub frame bolts or studs
Hi Bruce,
Yes I am well aware of what our Aussie CKD cars came with, having owned a number of them myself.
The Original post asked what a 1964 car with dry subframes would of had, without specifying what make the car was, so studs would be the logical choice. Or bolts. Either will work.
