Engine plate stamping

Post by YMJ »

Morning
I’d like to buy a new plate and a couple of rivets for my 850 gold seal motor.
Any tips on how to recreate the original number impressions and any warnings/advice about dealing with the remnants of the old rivets?

The old rivets are extremely hard if you want to drill them out but if they can be grabbed then you Should be able to twist them out. Try some controlled heat (heat gun) to warm the area. You can get original type rivets and a new stamped plate from minimail.

I cut a slot in the top of each rivet and using a small molegrips and a slot screwdriver encouraged them both out, intact so that they can be used again.

The Rivets are hard, if you try drilling them, it's very likely the drill will wonder off in to the cast iron of the block.

Recently I had one to get out, though I had the luxury of working on the bare block. I used a diamond ball bit in the dremal to put a centre point in it, then with a 2.5 mm carbide bit it drilled fairly easily.

I weld a M6 Nut on top of the Rivet. Broken or intact.

The heat then loses the rivet an it can then easy turned out...
I promise i won't buy another MkI...
