identify Oil cintrol rings

Post by Rockfordmini »

Just purchased new rings for 1968 998cc Cooper. Part number on the box is correct 6742.
The oil control ring is made up of four parts not the normal three.
Has any one seen this before?
I fitted the smaller six sided ring under the other three, a tight fit so I have some concerns.
Please help if you can.

Late in 65 BMC introduced new Oil Control Rings and also complete Ring sets to deal with excessive Oil Consumption.

These had 3 and in many sets. 4 pieces, though the expander was of a wave type, not the hex shape as in your set, though I have seen them in aftermarket sets. BMC did have a 4 piece set for the 998 engines (including the Cooper) under P/N 8G745.

BMC also had 'special' Ring Sets under the names of 'Oilmaster' and 'Duraflex' (the later were made by Repco Ltd) which were intended for bores that has a minimum of 0.005" wear and shouldn't be used in bores with less than this amount of wear. These were made with increased Ring Tension. I think, at 0.005" wear, most would rebore it !

Thank you for the information. These are old stock after market set made by Hepolite. I have fitted the rings and the oil rings are a tight fit, I think I’m going to play safe and buy a modern set with three piece oil control rings.
Again thanks for your help.
