Engine number tag rivet removal

Post by L7MAD »

Hi - anyone got any good tips as to the best way to remove old engine number tag rivets? The tag has already gone so no worry about damaging it, but I just want to get the rivets out to make way for a new tag.

Also does anyone make replacement engine capacity tags for Cooper 997 engines? I believe they had 1000 embosed in them.

Thanks alot - Paul.

Grind a slot for a screw driver in the head and they can usually be unscrewed then

Hi Paul,
Are the heads still on them? If so, there are a couple of ways to deal with them. I have used and old butchers knife and drive it under the plate and head of the drive-screw. If that doesn't work and the plate is going to be replaced, grind a flat on either side of the head and clamp it with vise-grips. Turn the drive-screw out counter-clockwise and it might help to use the knife idea to get it underway.

Regards
Al

Panel chisel at an shallow angle, on the dome of the rivet. Sharp tap with a hammer and they fly out.

Thanks guys - just removed them, as the heads were still there I went for the chisel method and it worked a treat :D

Shame the tags are not available Mark - I'll have to try to get a good used one or apply for a second mortgage just in case a NOS one comes up on ebay

Cheers Paul.
