How then do I clean HOY's original plate when it look like this
Covered in paint, quite thick in places ..

Carefully with a razor blade. Mine was entirely Island Blue. There’s still some on it and a few scratches. But it’s ok.

I lifted a lot off by sticking masking tape over it and peeling it off repeatedly. It does look quite thick on yours though. Have you any idea what type of paint it is? Perhaps soaking in panel wipe which will remove any greasy deposits and if there is oily dirt beneath the paint it may just penetrate beneath and help it unstick. I'm sure the plate will not have been degreased before it was sprayed so beautifully.

Cellulose thinners will work just fine on an original chassis plate, these weren't screen printed so the black won't be removed. Try a tiny area first if you don't believe me.

I've had good luck on a couple, just chipping away with my thumbnail......
I've had cellulous/lacquer thinners take the black coating right off...

Yes, it didn't take it right off, like it does on regular paint, but, the more you rubbed, you could see the black getting thinner......
And, it wasn't that much rubbing before you could see it......
This goes back 25-30 years ago, long before replacement plates were a thing in Canada......

Well, I've cleaned it by soaking for a few mins at a time in thinners and it has pretty much come off BUT at a price as BWA said. The black does come off very slowly when rubbing.
The paint was pretty thick and not that easy to come off.
That said, I'm happy with the result. Its the original chassis plate and let face it, we've all seen worse original ones on cars and it looks much better than it did earlier on today.
I've got a similar thing to try to do with the original S & A tag, not quite as bad but I fear all the black writing will disappear.

Mine was the same, painted all over with black hammerite paint and I was down to the plain aluminium plate after I got all the paint off.
So I had some stickers made and cut a 'window' in them for the original stamping to show through. I have a few left but only in the superior Morris brand.

I did pretty much the same thing, but using a regular laser printer and some sheets of high-temperature self adhesive transparent plastic.
Not as neat as Bob's though

Rather than thinners I would try dry ice blasting to remove the overspray.
Yes I am a nerd: I am researching the Austrian Mini-racing scene of the 60s and 70s

Have to say I much prefer how it has come out with some cleaning, over any other fix.

Have to agree with Hipwell, A tatty original Chassis plate is always my preferred option.

I'll swap you for an AA2S4 if that would help!
