Replacement early MK1 keys
Hi, I've just got my June 1969 mini back on the road (after 30years in the garage!!), and I've found that I've lost the boot key somewhere.
Could someone tell me if there is a way to find the boot key number and then get another one cut?
Also, could someone tell me if the key is the same shape (round) as the door/ignition key, so I know what shape key I'm looking for whilst I'm searching through all the old keys that I've got in the garage?
Many thanks

Re: Replacement early MK1 keys
As far as i know, these where the Keys they used back then.
Door, ignition and Boot should match.

Re: Replacement early MK1 keys
Ive owned my MK II "S" since January 1971, it was 8 months old. The car came with these keys, both have the same number, the round one I always used for the ignition and boot hence the square one is really new looking.. The keyfob is also 1970...

Thanks for the info. I've been told the lock might be jammed and that's why the door key doesn't seem to work on the boot, so I'll strip it down and check.
I was wondering why I could find it.
Thanks

If you can open the boot, then you can remove the boot handle. On the square section shank you will find a number stamped. For a '69 car these are preceded by FS to get your key number. The boot lock was not always the same as the door and ignition lock number. There were usually two keys.

Re: Replacement early MK1 keys
If you can get the lock out, you can remove the barrel & if you can do that it's a 5 minute job to modify the little tumbler things to make the lock work with yor existing door key assuming they are the same pattern (FS) or whatever.
With the barrel out, insert the key, carefully file off any protruding tumbler tops, clean, lubricate & re assemble.
It's always nicer to have a single key that fits all locks.

If you don't have any luck modifying the barrel wards to suit your key (I managed to screw mine up as I lost patience with it), contact below will supply a new barrel with the correct wards to suit your FS number key :

Re: Replacement early MK1 keys
I had the same problem with my boot lock!
Absolutely seized solid - no signs of rust or nasties, but honestly thought it was the wrong key!
Key number stamped on the square shank was the same, so ended up soaking the lock in penetrating oil for weeks and still solid!
Last resort was a careful bit of heat on the chrome circle you poke the key in, bit of lube, heat again and then it started to move. Seems they are prone to “fuseing” together.
(sorry for the spelling!!
I bought a couple of “new old stock” keys of someone on eBay and they came really quickly.

Thanks, I'll take it off tomorrow and have a look. Fingers crossed it won't be beyond revival.
