Battery clamp

Post by miniminor »

Could someone with an original battery clamp take few photos of it please? Mine will not clamp the battery no matter how I try it. Is it possible I have an incorrect later version?
I'm still running positive earth if that makes any difference in battery orientation?
(Currently have an appropriate sized piece of wood holding it steady)

One problem is that the "correct" battery listed for Minis now seems to be rather small. On my car I fitted a larger battery which fitted well and had a bit more reserve power (amp hours) in case the going gets tough.

I have one piece of plywood to stop left/right movement, and it’s a good fit front/back. The standard bar is upside down and works fine

Not knowing your car's model or vintage, I'm sure there were various types of clamps used throughout the years. In my case the clamp isn't really a clamp at all, rather a cap design with a hole in it. Most will find it hard to believe but my '70 S still retains it's original battery cables, 50 years on. The idea for it's original design was to drill a hole in the battery post, attach the cable end to the post and put a screw in it, still works fine. The car still retains it's original ground strap and clamp as well...

Are you sure you have the correct clamp on the correct terminal. +ve & -ve terminals are slightly different sizes & if you swap them over when going from +ve to -ve earth for example, you can have the issue described.

I was assuming he was talking about the clamp plate not the post clamps, as he mentioned using a block of wood to prevent the battery moving. Could be wrong though.
