Pressing in new rear stub axles

I am assuming that the pins push out through the top (as oriented in the picture below)? Looks like there may be a circlip on the shock/helper spring side so can only go in that direction.

Are these difficult to do? Do you need to use heat to get them out using a press?

Any advice welcome.

Use a lot of heat and the just knock out. Easy job really.
Circlip on one side so either remove that or knock through the other way.

I just press them, my press isn't big at all and it does them easy.

I'd suggest before removing it though to check it for any bends or it may damage the bore in the arm as it comes out. If it is bent, cut it off low (not too low though) de-bur it, then press it.

OK sounds good. I have a modest 20Ton press so I will try without heat first and see how it goes.

Not a big problem pushing out these stub axles. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement hydrolastic stub axles?

I need to find replacements with the pin for the helper spring and I don't see it at Mini Spares... If unavailable I suppose I could turn down dry axles to make the helper pin??

Has someone pressed in dry stubs into hydro arms in the past Gary ?

Good question on whether someone has ever pressed in a dry stub into a wet arm... I guess I was assuming they were identical dimensions since they use the same bearings (same inner race ID). I appreciate the link for the hydro pins but it looks like they may not have both sides and that is really expensive!

Anybody see anything wrong with turning down dry pins to make wet pins? Anyone have drawings of a dry pin or even a decent picture?

I spent some time looking for suitable wet stubs to press in, as the pin supporting the helper spring often wears away. They are difficult to find, and as mentioned about, don't forget to get the correct hand for the thread.

A few alternatives are to machine a dry arm, as these are much more available.
Or modify your existing arm, without the need to press it out, to add a new hardened pin. There is a useful guide on this forum that details this approach...

I have pressed out wet stubs and replaced with dry. While it should not be a problem pressing in new or modified pins.
I did have a dry stub bend the shock pin while pressing it in. Lesson learned press with a small bore piston pin to avoid
damage. Steve (CTR)

Thanks Andrew. I will probably just go ahead and push the other old stub axle out and then make new pins in a similar fashion to Peter's article.

The pins are not hard at all Gary and drilled as though they we're just mild steel.

I got the groove machined to take the original style retaining clip rather than drilling for a split pin, but that was my personal preference.

Yes, maybe... I was following that thread with interest since it is also a wet arm with a dry pin. I modified mine very crudely by cutting off the old helper spring pin and drilling and welding the remains of a cutoff bolt to work with a shock absorber. At the same time, I threw away a perfectly good set of hydrolastic displacers. I did many regrettable things when I was young and the car wasn't worth anything!
