The picture is the right way up, the pipes go up the front face, and ,over top of the rear subframe......

But not the brake and fuel pipe?

They run over the subframe too, but I suspect would have been fitted to the body before it was dropped on - they're relatively easy to connect up afterwards at the rear and obviously don't connect to the front subframe.

When did crimped end silencers appear?

It looks like a 998 Cooper unit...it has the old style remote noisy gear lever. Top rad hose is the style for the non S engine too.
The silencers were black back then...and were welded together.......still have the original one off my 64 1071.
Also, interesting...no MOWOG on the rear crossmember!

Dermott , Do you know if the silencers were black on all the MK1 Cooper range ??

From memory....both of my 64 S's had/have a black welded style silencer....even my 65 S had a black one as well.
I suspect the silver painted change was an industry change sometime around 65 ish....
Someone else may have more info. on this question.

Regarding the change to crimped......doesn't look like it was a definite change...more of a phase in as the new products came on board....
The crimped ends were an industry change....probably easier and cheaper to produce.....
Perhaps they crimped version came in around late 65 early 66!

11 February, or, November 2nd.....numerical date sequences are not universally in the same format around the globe......

Using the date sequence used on this forum, it would be the latter.......

Yep my request was January to March 64. They in turn wanted some very specific pics of my Feb 64 shell.

I suspect you'll find AJB 44B's original shell build date was very close, as it was in a pile of stuff from in and around those dates. There were some cracking shots of work in progress at that time.

Folks, I don't think this was ever intended to be a car but an early set up for hydro experimentation. I may be wrong but the pictures I was looking at related to a very narrow timeframe, much of which came back with experimental and works car stuff.

My shell was first repaired in the early 90s by people who worked at Fischer's body panel plant in Llanelli, I am trying to track one down now and recently made contact with his son. The reason for this is that I recall him saying that hydro panels were being experimented with in late 63. If that is what he says, it will corroborate what another ex employee from there has already told me.

So please look at this pic in that light, it may not be 100 per cent accurate in terms of production cars. For example, wasn't positive crankcase ventilation introduced mid 64?
