I have a 998 with engine number 99H143-H5783. I can't find any information as to what the 143 stands for. Does anybody know?
Thanks
Brian

Re: Engine Identification
According to my BL parts list from 1969 the 143 means Ub + Be + A which are codes for a Lucas C40 dynamo, oil pressure gauge and automatic transmission....

Re: Engine Identification
I appreciate the information. Weird thing is that its bolted to a 22G68 gearbox. Been sitting for years in a garage and I don't think it's been converted from auto to manual. Without having to split the two or tear it down to remove the oil pump and see if there's a plate etc. in there is there any way to tell externally? I'm not aware of any differences externally but maybe I could tell if the oil port has been drilled or something?IslandBlue wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 11:10 am According to my BL parts list from 1969 the 143 means Ub + Be + A which are codes for a Lucas C40 dynamo, oil pressure gauge and automatic transmission....

Re: Engine Identification
FYI Mark has a copy of AKD5103 with many of the engine codes listed on the website

Yes it's easy to forget what a mine of information that website is, would it be a good idea to include in the Quick Links at the top of the page?timmy201 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 4:42 am FYI Mark has a copy of AKD5103 with many of the engine codes listed on the website

I was quoting from my copy of AKD5313 Edition 1 for cars to October 1969 which is an abridged parts list "intended to provide easy identification of genuine BL components used in general repairs and maintenance". It may date from Dec 1970 judging by some of the print details.
