Body Tag Location on Early Mk1

Post by kensk77 »

Is the 6 digit body tag on an early Mk1 found welded to the right front inner floor pan? This is where I always thought it was located and often lost to floor repair. I recently saw a supposedly original 1960 showing it on the left side. However the number didn't match that of the Heritage Certificate also posted with the ad.
thanks,
Brian

I don't think any of the tags inside the car have much official status.

The only "official" body number could be a BMK tag near the speedo, or stamped into the inner wing stiffener near the fuse box & flasher unit, and is sometimes recorded on the Heritage record.

The FE number is also sometimes recorded on the Heritage cert.

The body tag or remains of is located on the LH floor (RHD) in the rectangular depression where your feet rest. This is a 1966 SDL. It is a square edged tag similar to the FE tag on the inner wing and is spot wleded to the floor pan. The location is mentioned in the front of the BMC workshop manulas of the day and also at the start of the parts manuals.

"Floor tags displaying numbers, these photographs show original mid-October 1959 floors on two Cherry red cars. The numbers bare no correlation to FE, body or chassis numbers of the cars they are attached, the floors are one piece pressings yet there is a tag on each foot-well. We don’t know the significance of the numbers, can anyone help?"

Asked a chap who used to press the floors in Llanelli. According to his recollection, only a single tag was in the floor - for stock management and no more.

Perhaps the second tag was added on completion??? The FE being the front end number - I am guessing that too was on the car before build up??

Had some very interesting chats with this chap - especially when it came to stock management. Shall we just say that there are some nice early cars in and around Llanelli :-)
