Seat material

Post by Louis »

Afternoon all,

I am looking at some early powder blue fleck seats which have damage on the blue section. Rather than replace the whole covers and lose the originality, can the door cards be used as donors for the material or is this different material to the seats?

Alternatively can anyone suggest replacement material or is Newton Commercial the only option?

Thanks!

The materials on mine look different, though you may be able to put the door lining on some kind of stronger backing.
Someone advertises a grey fleck design by the metre, and houndstooth design in the for sale pages of the 1959 register.
They may be of help or perhaps be able to advise?

Thanks for the response, I have just sent them an email to see if they can assist too.

I think a new cover from Newton may stand out too much when sat next to an original seat

The original material & the newton stuff don't really match at all.

If you can find s/h seats this is a much better bet if trying to match.

That was my concern, it looks like second hand covers do not come up very often (or in poor condition) so I will look more into replacing just the section but I imagine trying to replace just one side of the blue will be a headache given the seams.

A representative from the 1959 register responded, (for reference they only sell the fleck material) but suggested Martrim as a material source, so I have a sample from them on the way to compare with the original material.

Are you after blue or fleck material? It is not 100% clear from your first post.

Martrim are a good source of "Standard" vinyls, but don't do the fleck orthe full range of original BMC used vinyls.

Sorry, it is the blue section, the fleck is available by the metre from the 59 register but not sure on how well it matches unless anyone has tried before?

I got my sample through today from Martrim, I'm happy with the ease or ordering and the speed of delivery, will compare the materials soon to see.

*Edit* photo below for future reference. The material seems a similar thickness, maybe a small amount thicker however the colour match is not good in my case
