Swapping 22G1128 Gearbox Sandwich Plate Remote for solid

Post by parentevan »

Hello all. I have a 22G1128 casing with CR gears and rubber axle joints, and a sandwich plate on my '64 Mini with a 1275 silver seal. Here is my question... Can I simply swap the differential cover and remote housing for a non-sandwich plate diff cover and remote housing? I'm having some sloppy shifting and I believe getting rid of the torn up sandwich plate rubber will help.

The diff caps are matched to each gearbox, so while not impossible, it's not straight forward.

If you have or know someone who has a heap of diff caps you can try on your gearbox, you might get lucky and find one that's close enough.

There's been a few discussions on the forum regarding cap swaps. If you can't find one that's close, you can have some machining done to get the job done.

No need to swap the caps at all.......

Scrape out as much rubber as you can, and, run a big heavy weld down the joint, effectively making the top and bottom one big solid piece, bolt up as usual......

Or, make up two side plates out of 1/8" steel with 4 holes in each, same shape as the side of the rubber joint thingamy and, bolt it up solid using the same mounting bolts........

I've used both methods, both work great......

Thank you. I entered in different search criteria after seeing your reply, and found more technical data to read. I appreciate your help.

I did consider this some time back, but I wasn't sure there was enough strength in the cast lugs where the bolts screw in, but, from your experience, it seems OK. Did you fit up any additional engine steadies ?

Just refreshed my spare 1128 Box & was surprised to find wear on the Ball of the vertical shaft that locates within the Diff Cover (mine is remote type ) this wear was to both sides of that gear change linkage Ball surface which would be one reason that i had some slop in my gear change.

The sandwich plate was used on 1100/1300 but I’m seeing conflicting info that perhaps some Cooper models such as the GT may have come with the sandwich plate remote gearbox. Can anyone confirm?

No extra steadies, the remote casting is plenty strong enough.......

Just get an all metal 'sandwich' plate.

I would just get a new sandwich plate.
A new runber plate has hardly any movement in and I've never had an issue when using a good rubber plate. As always try and avoid poor quality cheap copies but they are not rare, even NOS one can be found.
