JMO 969D
by worksminis » 01 Apr 2017, 16:10
Coupe des Alpes September 66. Makinen/Easter. Group 2. Retired
RAC November 66. Hopkirk/Crellin. Group 2. Retired
Swedish February 67. Makinen/Easter. Group 2. (New car? Number plate swap? Original car?) Retired
Believed used as recce car at least twice.
RAC November 67. Cancelled some 12 hours before the start. Fall/Wood. Group 6. Believed new car.
Circuit of Ireland April 68. Hopkirk/Harryman. Group 6. Retired (prepared by Comps)
Scottish June 68. Ytterbring/Persson. Group 6 (with external auxiliary radiator). 2nd (re-prepared by Special Tuning)
Sold to R. Lawrence.
Up to and including the Plains Rally, October 68, Lawrence's appearances in the Motoring News Championship are in a Cooper S, registered 274COG (?exact reg no tbc). JMO969D appears from then on. The extra radiator used on the last works appearance is gone (and the n/s/r wheel arch extension lost on the Scottish is replaced).
Lawrence is known to have used his brother's S rather than JMO969D on at least one occasion (and his brother's engine on another). It has been said that the original car was re-shelled at some point in RL's ownership. After the 69 Manx off seems a likely time scale? In the following list, only where JMO969D has NOT been confirmed by official entry list or results is lack of such confirmation indicated by a question mark:
68
Nov Shenstone 4th
Dec Targa Rusticana 2nd
69
Jan Dursley 1st
Feb Norwester Ret
Feb Seven Dales 34th
Mar Bristowe 2nd (pushed to last TC – main bearings)
Mar Welsh Marches Ret – rolled - brother's S (JMO originally entered)
Apr Vales DNS (too soon after Circuit Of Ireland to re prepare JMO)
Apr Nutcracker JMO? with brother's engine
Apr Manx Ret (off down bank – minor injuries)
Aug Gremlin Ret (seen spectating later at Altmawr)
Nov Shenstone JMO on entry list for King/Lawrence. RL navigated for Andrew King in Rover2000
70
Feb Bristowe JMO? Ret hit wall
Mar Welsh Marches 10th
Apr Vales 3rd
Apr Nutcracker JMO? 3rd
May Dubonnet 3rd
May Manx JMO? Ret gearbox
Aug Gremlin 7th (would have been 2nd or 3rd but car drowned in ford)
Sep Cilwendeg 2nd (Cooper Ss 1,2,3,5,7,9)
Sep AGBO 1st JMO?
Oct Plains 10th (missed TC)
Oct Dukeries 12th (fan belt – replaced with string) JMO?
Nov Torbay 7th
Dec Targa Rusticana 3rd
71
Jan Dubonnet 7th JMO?
Mar Welsh Marches Ret (“ageing car ground to halt on Hay Bluff”)
Apr Nutcracker 3rd
Dec Targa Rusticana RL makes a one off appearance in one of the Jolly Club UK Lancia Fulvia HFs.

The Fall 67 RAC car carrying JMO969D appears to have been used in the TV "rallysprint" on the day of the cancelled 67 RAC. (Photo Peter Robinson showing car covered in mud). Previously it was thought only GRX311D and OBL46F had run.

Rob Lawrence was co-driven by Phil Muddiman on the 1969 Circuit of Ireland. After I retired with Jock Russell in the Porsche 911 we drove as a chase car and I had to change the fan from the incorrect 16-blade on to a 4-blade which Paddy persuaded the works team to give me (= skinned knuckles!). That cured the overheating and I believe Rob went on to finish 7th overall (that's from an old man's memory).
