badge restoration tip

Post by Bitsilly »

Fellow anoraks, lend me your ears.
I took my 1960 Austin horn push and polished all the scratches on the front out using fine wet and dry and metal polish.
It came up a shiny treat!
But the silver detail of the emblem was rubbish, now that it was visible.
I washed the back of it with a brush under the tap and the black backing washed off, exposing the rubbish silver (which can locally be removed with a pin), but the red parts seemed insoluble and stayed there.
Sprayed a bit of aluminium Hi-cote from the back and it filled the silver bits really well.
The thing now has a weight and quality not available from retro parts but looks IMHO most excellent.

Just thought I'd share!
