Double skin boot lid. Quality?

Post by MkI-Speedwell »

I need a new double skin bootlid for my Cooper. M. Machine doesn't make them, and I've been told Mini Spares brings them in. The only supplier is Magnum.

Has anybody purchased one, or had experience with the aftermarket double-skin?

Doesn't the magnum lid have the later outer skin without the number plate lamp recess ?. I remember considering one a while back but this put me off. They also have holes through the inner skin for accessing the plinth screws, again as it's a later outer skin. Maybe they've changed it but this was why I never went down that route.

I bought one for my Innocenti restoration as the original Inno doubleskin had rotten something awful. I changed the front skin for the Inno one, so I can't comment on the correctness of the outer skin, but the quality is pretty good. The pressing of the inner skin is nice and smooth, no wrinkles or anything like that.
Of course I know what a dipstick is, you get called something often enough you look it up!

I would check the corners of the Non-gen Bootlid. The arc in the corners is not smooth and it doesnt match the boot opening. If you go there to buy one, take your old one with you and compare them. Make them to get more than one out, they are all different! I also dont like the three holes on the inside, my MK II genuine bootlid doesnt have them.

I also believe there is a difference in shape above number plate on repro mk1 type bootlid skins, if you compare the two it can be seen, just can’t remember which one was straighter now. Think genuine one is straight above number plate recess.

The pressing above the number plate on the heritage mk1/2 boot lid skins is wrong. It looks like they've just modified the mk3 press and added the lower part of the mk1 recess to a mk3 skin.
