I have the original Hills plates for my Mk1 complete with alloy digits.
I'm going to restore them but can't tell if the black finish on the plates was gloss, satin or something else - any hints and tips on the 'correct' finish?

It should be somewhere between satin & gloss, I would say about 80% gloss.
