Ignition Problems.

Post by GarysMK1 »

Hi gents,
Ive fitted an Accuspark electronic ign. to my 850, dispensing of the points and condenser. Also changed rotor arm that came in kit. Have had engine running great with no issues. On 1st trip out, it stopped dead - no spark at all. Checked everything over after pushing it home and found nothing. The car then started again ? Ran in garage great then suddenly stopped , again with no spark at plugs.
Have 12v at coil with ign. on.
Q. Ive seen ELECTRONIC ign. distributor caps for sale for mini's . Should i be using one instead of my original cap and could this be the cause of it just cutting out ??
Regards Gary

The Accuspark conversion kit was meant to work with your otherwise stock ignition system. You should not need to buy anything special. Frankly I'm curious to know what would make a distributor cap specific for an electronic ignition.

You said this was on an 850. Which distributor (23D, 25D, 45D, etc.)? Many early Lucas distributors require a ground wire from the breaker plate to the distributor housing. If the wire is broken or omitted the ignition system can have intermittent firing problems. Also check the terminals on the low tension wires. Several years ago some of the kits had pre-installed low tension terminals that needed to be replaced or re-crimped.

There have also been problems with some of the aftermarket rotors "shorting to ground" internally. You said you installed a new rotor. You may need to put the old one back on as a test to see if the problem goes away.

Also, did you check your ignition timing AFTER you installed the kit?

It could be overheating.

The Coils that need to be used with these must have a certain minimum resistance (check with Acuspark) and no less, or it could be as Larry suggested, a coil on the way out.

I fitted an Acuspark module to my Contessa when I restored it! did a couple of runs round local roads
everything was OK.
Then the first decent run to Blyton couple of years ago really warm and successful day, on the way back
to Leeds got halfway home when engine started cutting out! I suspected the coil did not have a spare
with me, as it was a busy bank holiday weekend didn't want to risk the M62 so got AA recovery.
The next day it started and ran good for about 15mins! as the coil was 40 years old although only 25,K
went to Mini spares picked up a new coil, fitted that again same result, so refitted a set of points with
a quality condenser from the distributor Doctor! result still running on points did get a couple of sets of
Unipart points from a member on here.

Accuspark 300mls That ended up under the heavy end of a 2lb hammer :o
Points 7000mls since car back on the road

Sorry for rambling on ( Grumpy old Git HaHa)
The lack of events etc to go to, Hope this sh*t* is over soon.

Another Long Story ..I had two Distributors fully rebuilt for my 997 & 1070 and they were both fitted with Acuspark..the 997 Distributor was fitted & Car all ran all ok for about 300miles then the bloody thing just would not start & there were very strange issues happening with just one Spark Plug not showing a spark .. must be a new Plug at fault ?.. then very odd this faulty Plug was back working again? ..but another Plug was now not sparking & yet the previous questionable failed Plug was now back working .. Sod it ..next i changed out the Aucuspark unit & borrowed my spare unit from my other reconditioned 1070 Distributor .. My 997 then fired up with no other changes & still Runs OK ( for now) .. i am an Old Git ( my excuse ) for not reading the Warnings on the Paperwork.. Yes "hey ho" it is written that the electronic system needs to use HT Leads that are Not like mine which are 100% Copper Core .. so i either need to scrap my HT Copper Core Leads & fit those New Fangled type HT Leads :o
My Best Solution is to convert my 997 back to proper points ... and chuck out this modern crap.
