Repairing holes in a twin carb air filter box

Post by Blacktulip »

Is it possible to repair a rust hole in a twin carb air box? Has anyone done this before successfully?

They’re easy enough to weld up not really any more complicated that welding body panels.

Trouble is the surrounding metal is probably too thin. I have rust treated it to stop it from getting worse.

Do you have a picture of the hole location?...may be able to suggest a fix if we can see where the problem is.

Have you considered one of the epoxy metals like JB Weld. De rust first and key up the area. It’s pretty good stuff.

Wow that’s toasty.

Need to see what left under that surface rust.

As above, thoroughly de-rust the housing. Consider using electrolysis to get in all the tiny spots. Do not sandblast.

After getting all the rust off, you could try JB Weld. Were this my project I would skin the inside with fiberglass cloth. Then you could apply skim coats of body filler to the pips on the outside and eventually paint.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. These are not on my car, it's for a set of twins I'm restoring for the shelf. The lid is great it's just this base. I like the idea of jb weld. It would be nice if there was a self levelling epoxy resin available for these types of jobs. Would an ultrasonic bath work to de-rust?

Try Bilt Hamber Deox Gel for the rust removal. I’ve used it to good effect on rusty stuff. The advantage is it’s not aggressive like media blasting.

Ultrasonic cleaning will only get the loosest rust off. You need to either chemically clean the rust away with phosphoric acid or you need to try electrolysis as I mentioned earlier. (Some people use muriatic acid, others like milder citric acid... I use phosphoric). If you fill with JB Weld, I still suggest a filler fiberglass cloth or similar to bridge the larger holes.

I think I will give the bilt hamber stuff a go and then the in weld and see how well I can get it back. I think some tlc and it will be nice.

Just a thought but I have hammerite kurust that i used on the inside. Can I use this instead of the bilt hamber or will it need submersing in a bath solution?

Like any other painting project, the results you get depend on the effort you invest prior to painting. Leave the rust behind, expect a less than wonderful appearance where rust returns in the future.
