Early Breather for flywheel housing
Breather 12G1938 is a plastic bodied breather for the flywheel housing. I have never seen one on a car, I thought it was for the early GT. I checked on Somerfords site and they show it listed for the 1275 cooper S 69 to 71.
Was it fitted to early GT's as well 69 to 71 ?

This one?
I originally had a metal version of it which came on the 1967 austin 1300 engine I bought in the mid 80's.
This plastic replacement was bought in the early 90's from my local rover dealer when I lost the top of the metal breather.

Re: Early Breather for flywheel housing
I have this type of plastic case & steel gauze breather installed on my 1275GT with 1300GT Engine.. i think this type of Breather is great because it can be cleaned out without to much trouble .. plus it is discreet & not sticking up like a early design of a tin can space station
If i could find another same type of Breather i will Buy .. but never seen any for sale ?

My 69 1275gt didn't have one, it had the closed circuit breather, but I couldn't be certain it was the original engine.
Ive only ever seen them on really early austin 1300's

Re: Early Breather for flywheel housing
I had one of these on an ADO16 1275 engine I stuck in my old MK1, I can't remember if it was original to that particular engine or if it was something I found lying around the 'spares' caravan, wherever it came from it wasn't from an 'S' engine or a 1275GT 'cos there wasn't any there so it definitely was from a 1300 of some sort.
Found a, pretty shite it must be said, pic of it, you can just about see it!!

Re: Early Breather for flywheel housing
Well it looks like it was fitted to some early 1275 GT's but more common on 1300's ( still cant get used to referring to a 1100 /1300 as an ADO 16
)
I have breather, new still in its bag and thought I had a valuable rare part. Looks like I will have to wait a little longer.

However if you are looking to sell your NOS Breather can i have your price please ? . many thanks Norman.
Re: Early Breather for flywheel housing
I lost the top of my original metal one, the top was just a push fit and would fall off occasionally but was usually sitting on the subframe, the battery cable stopping it falling off.
On the plastic replacement I got from Austin Rover the top snaps on securely.

When I mentioned it wasn't from a 1275GT or 'S' I was meaning the actual one I had fitted to my engine.smithyrc30 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 10:32 amMy 1970 1275GT had one.
