Hello,
I need a Mk I pedal box. I found a 1964 car for parts. Is it the same as my 1966 Mk I Cooper S?

Re: Mk I Pedals - Differences
There are at least four different brake pedals that were used during Mk 1 production that I am aware of:
earliest brake pedal was skinny, with no reinforcing strip welded to the side (eg early single leading shoe drum brake cars)
- modified skinny drum brake pedal fitted with a reinforcing strip welded from the pivot bush housing about 3 inches long down the pedal pendant as fitted to most drum brake cars
- early disc brake pedal of thicker material, but pedal pad still sits at same height as clutch pedal (eg fitted to 997 Coopers)
- later, S type, disc brake pedal of thicker material and with pedal pad cranked higher to allow more travel to the toe board.
Others on here will have far more expertise than me on this subject.
Cheers

You pretty well covered it....the later S thick pedal will have a dab of yellow paint on them.....seems like someone at BMC was fond of that yellow paint...have seen it on various S componentsMaddog wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 11:56 am There are at least four different brake pedals that were used during Mk 1 production that I am aware of:

Is there any repros available Dermott?
When did they introduce the thicker pedal?

I think the later standard minis have that thicker pedal...I think...others may have better info. as we haven't had minis here fir many years.
Regarding a change point...bit vague...I am attaching a couple of pages from the AKD3509 parts book.
It shows that the early S had the same pedal/s as the standard mini....also shows a change point for R and LH cars...
Hope this helps.

We used to keep an eye out in the scrapyards for the late 60s early 70 thick pedals. Later pedals had the same offset but a different pedal that could be ground down to look the part as well.
By 66 these were on the S, just refitted mine this week on my 64

Re: Mk I Pedals - Differences
You may well be right that later cars had the S pedal even on drum brakes. Here in Australia I had a Deluxe (drum brake) car and have recycled the pedal box in a car with discs. The Deluxe brake pedal was indeed the S type, which I only realised after pulling it out. I'm 99% confident it had never been tampered with before. It would seem to make sense to standardise on a common, improved, part. But BMC didn't always seem to employ common sense in such matters.
