duff camshaft choice?

duff camshaft choice?
I was rebuilding a 998 last year for a certain application and bought a Minispares Evolution001 camshaft with the prospect of lots of grunt at low rpm.
I have just revisited the project and the local A series "expert" has suggested I have wasted my money and should've kept the standard camshaft after I told him about the expected rev range.
To be honest, when I said "low rpm" what I should've said was "tickover".
Personally, I don't think it'll make a difference but is there anyone who has experience with this camshaft and what it can do?
And I really do mean "tickover" revs...900rpm to no more than 3000rpm

Seems relatively tame to me, basically a 997 cam with 5 more degrees on the inlet......
If the intake and exhaust are well sorted, should idle fine, even in a 998........

The evo001 is a very good cam in both 998 and 1275. Think maybe something else is hold it back.
For more low down torque perhaps you should fit a 1098 crank and pistons to give it a longer stroke. Con rods are common to both sizes.

I have one in my 998 and I think it's an excellent cam, don't worry it's certainly not duff!

I checked it and I think (it was a couple of years ago!) it was 107 dot to dot, only 1 or 2 degrees off recommended so I left it at that as being close enough

The evo1 that I just fitted along with new timing chain/gears was 102° dot to dot. Had to use a 5° woodruff to bring it into spec.

Why do you need power at tickover?
I've build maybe ten engines with this camshaft, and they've always prroduced good results with good torque. It goes in the Kent 266/SW5 bracket.
Most 998s with modified heads and Hs4 are approx 52bhp, and the 1293-1310cc engines are about 84ish. So, if you want power at tickover, then don't fit a camshaft that's "hotter".

YMJ, this is what I’ve found about fast road Mini camshafts over the past couple of years with similar engine builds. I’ve never used the Mini Spares Evolution 001 camshaft for no apparent reason. I run 4 similar 1293cc Cooper S engines and all four use different mild road camshafts. Without getting technical this evaluation is my opinion on how they drive in standard road cars with the four camshafts in my favourite order:- The Kent 266 is a brilliant fast road camshaft top end and has nice mid range power. It does not have a real smooth idle at 900 RPM which I don’t like. The Kent 256 and MED XT camshafts are fantastic fast road camshafts and much alike as they don’t have the top end power the 266 gives but are beautiful low and mid range cams with smooth idle at 900 RPM. The Swiftune SW5 idles like a factory standard 848cc Mini and feels like a standard factory camshaft to me. Some people have told me that the Swiftune SW5 needs 1.4 ratio rockers to give its best. All my camshafts run on standard 1.3 ratio rockers. Only recently I changed a customer’s engine from Kent 266 to Kent 256 and he is delighted with the 256 cam we got from Mini Spares.

What else did you do to the engine? Any head modifications? Inlet and exhaust manifolds? Air filter? correct needle and spring in the carb? Is ignition set up properly, timed in with the right kind of advance curve? On it's own a mild fast road cam won't make that much difference.

For the rev range your talking about run the mildest cam you can, and run it advanced.

finished it at the weekend and ran it up on the dyno yesterday. Better than I'd ever believed possible.
Monster torque starting at 1900, peaking at 3650rpm. And much more power than I need
Ended up utilising the HS4...tried twin HS2s, single HS2 and a bloody great big HIF44 Metro thing (massive flat spot with this).
Ended up with the cam timed at 106deg (those vernier wheels are great, aren't they?)
Cant remember the dynamic timing but I do know we backed it off for a greater spread.
