Where to buy a new crank damper

Post by Blacktulip »

My crank damper has a wear groove in the shaft from the seal and i cant find the right part anywhere. What are my options? It's a mk2 998cc cooper.

If you are planning on replacing the existing dampener due to a groove from previous shaft seals... have you considered a Speedi-Sleeve to repair what you have?

Seven Enterprises lists the sleeve as part number 520-515 which is a Moss Motors part number. The MGA Guru website offers equivalent industrial part number as 99156. Moss Europe is out of stock while Moss U.S. has the sleeve available. A quick search for "sleeve 99156" shows that Amazon and Rock Auto have the sleeves available for 1/2 the cost.

I have not used this particular sleeve but I have used Speedi Sleeves on other cars with success.

Got the sleeve today and I must say what a brilliant idea. However... the sleeve overhangs the end of the shaft by a few mm. How can I trim it back? It needs to be at least flush otherwise it will crunch up on the oil thrower.

Yes best to grind it back, I use a small band sander on an angle to take it a few thou below flush, turning the pulley slowly in the lathe. don’t bother trying to part it off in lathe or cut it, they deform very easily.

Sleeves are great, strengthen up the pulley where they crack along the key way too.

As Hipwell said, grind the overhang off. In addition to things like sanders you can use a Dremel with cut-off wheels or stones. Or you could use small diameter cut-off wheels with a pneumatic grinder. Just pay attention to the way the wheel or stone is turning. You want the wheel or stone pushing the sleeve in towards the center... not pulling the sleeve away from the hub.

Cheers for the advice. I fine filed it back then 1500 grit to deburr the edge on an angle and it's very neat now. I will definitely recommend these. They make it look brand new again. The seal fits really nice over it now.
