As I learnt, if it is someone that knows what they’re doing, it also depends on whose steel caps you’re intending to use. Some need more passes than others and hence cost more
Cheers for the comments, i thought £260 was a bit on the dear side.....
Time to get some other prices.........me thinks...any recommendations within 25 miles Reading?
Classic And Modern get thumbs up from Rae Davis .... http://cmesuk.com/
Not heard of them before, thanks for recommendation, can you remember the cost? It s not everything, just interested to see how much variation there is

If a Yorkshireman went all the way to Suffolk, it must be cheap
Sleep is my favourite thing in the world. It's what gets me out of bed in the morning.
Does the machine shop know what size the caps are supplied at?
Swiftune ones are a lot closer to finished size than MED.
Gosnays in Romford charged nearly double to do MED caps, normal price was £185 to do Swifty ones.
The money saved buying the cheaper MED caps was false economy...lesson learnt.

If your having a block line bored with steel caps you want somebody that will do it correctly and in tolerance , not looking for the cheapest job .
Thanks for advice, not looking for cheapest over quality, but its not something I have done every day, trying to get a feel for how much prices and quality varied and maybe some recommendations

This, £260 is well spent if the job has been completed perfectly.
There is also a massive difference between line boring a block with new caps to whistling through aN existing block with a line honer.
Scholar dont work cheap but do give value for money. I have dealt with them for 30 years and Alan Wardropper is a friend but that's not why I use them. I find there work consistently of a high standard, when an engine arrives its properly finished off. I am especially pleased with the restoration of my 1970 andy barton S engine which they did. They were/are best known for Kent Formula ford building so know engine machining backwards. But they do all makes and actually have quite a depth of experience with a series and did my fia mini heads part cnc finishing by hand and flow tested against competitors. I am sure there are plenty of other good engine shops about and normally its a personal choice.

Classic example of a bloke copying something without measuring or examining properly
