Dual Tank line hookup, pump, and rally line routing.

Post by Fortytwo »

Hello,
I know there's a lot of topics here but they all are related. I am in the US and therefore don't have many opportunities to actually look at a mini in person. Please be kind when i ask obvious questions.
Im restoring a 63 amateur rally mini that was used in early to mid 70s. MY goal is to make it close to its 76 version but also keep safety and comfort in mind.

How does one hook up dual tanks, the left is original with sending unit and the right is aftermarket. Do you simply hook the feed and vent together with Y's and then go into the fuel pump?

Pump was originally a Mitsuba from what i can tell from the B&G 1970 catalog posted on the host site (thanks for all those). I believe the owner ordered a lot from that catalog. Its rusted out now, should i seek out another one of these units, feeding two HS4 Carbs.

Last big question. Formerly the Fuel, Brake, and battery ran along side the tunnel on the passenger side, with rubber hose covering the line. There were holes drilled through the seat crossmember to run them, i dont want to do this after all the repair. It was used for road course and some ralley/ hill climb's. I don't believe i will be doing anything more exotic than a road course with it. Should i just plan on routing them in the original locations? Any more elegant pictures of routing you guys can post? i do plan on fitting a passenger seat and carpet or vinyl floor, too much repair to just paint.

Yes people often just T the tank feeds together, but the vents go to their separate sides. You can either fill just one tank very slowly, and the other tank will slowly fill too. Or fill one side and then nip round and fill the other.

People do run the lines inside along the tunnel, but the cross member / tunnel region is highly stressed (often reinforced on Works cars) so I'd avoid drilling it. So either run the lines over the X member or run them down the sills and into the rear pockets

Thanks, When running th elines do they also run the battery with them? and whats the best way to enter the car form the rear? I only ask because im patching all that area up this week and dont want to drill a new patch. and patch old holes not needed.I have seen a nice brake routing over the tunnel, I was going to use 3/16 brake lines, is the same for fuel or do i need to go larger?
Thanks

I doubt you will find another of these fuel pumps.

As a replacement I would consider a Facet Gold Flo. Speak to you retailer to get the right one for your application.

Are you doing sanctioned road course events. If so you may want to find out what the sanctioning body will allow regards internal fuel lines spec and fitting. You should not have any joints in the fuel line inside the passenger area. Another thing, make sure any flexible fuel line connections are compatible with your local supplied fuel. They have been lots of problems with ethanol fuels eating some type of rubber hose.

There is a problem with routing supplies down the central tunnel. It’s called heat. On a hard used car with a high out put engine the central tunnel can get rather hot. Hot enough to vapourize fuel and melt insulation (and set carpets smouldering). It does do to preheat the brake fluid either.

Abingdon Competition dept moved away from the central tunnel approach to routing fuel, brakes and battery cable along the sills and across the top of the crossmember. Some went through the rear pockets others round the outside (easier). If you are going to use your car hard I would do the same.

@surfblue36 thanks for the link, i think your right about not finding the pump. i was crushed what i realized it was desirable and left to rot! I will hve to ask around about local courses. I think for now i am going to have to prime it all and get seats before i start planning for running down the sills.

found this article that actually shows some nice routing of the line. Unfortunately the pics are not that god resolutions, but it might be enough for me to get an idea. At least i can copy the entry points into the car from the trunk area.

Regarding a choice for an electric fuel pump, Mini Spares sells one, AUF214MS, that has had good endorsements.

Thanks. I’ll check that one out too. Even though I won’t need one for a while. I have to buy one to not have to drill on fresh paint.
