What do you think of these hinges and arches?

Post by Keith Grendahl »

Car was modified around 1971 here in the U.S. There is a lot of undercoat under the wing but I am pretty sure they are welded on, not rolled. Any comments on leaving them on an early shell?

The original brass hinges have been chromed. I like the look but am undecided as to whether to repair them (I had to put a bush in one) or install new alloy hinges and have them painted whenever I do a restoration. Comments?

not my cup of tea affraid. Rather see the neat lines of Factory type finish. easier to get replacment parts if/ when they are required.
From looks of it your mirrors are Unusual as well..
Minis are all about personalisation. so go with what you like the look of....

Hi Kieth,

There has been much debate regarding this subject here, and on other forums.

Many people restore there Mini, back to factory spec, and very few dare to leave custom/period mods, on the car.

I think custom modifications (if welldone, and in spirit) with the Mini, should be kept.

Its a part of the cars history, and in 20-30 years time, there will be NON of these cool cars, left, only old pictures in 60/70ies magazines.

But as said before, its YOUR car, so you do what you feel like.

It looks like your wheel arches are a nice/well done job 8-) and the chromed hinges are cool too ;)

I agree too
Whatever you have should be OK.

What is original anyway?... e.g. a Le Mans Blower Bentley....out of necessity only had a replacement body, chassis, engine, gearbox, axles, springs, wheels, tyres, exhaust and tonneau cover etc etc...... so totally original ???

I know lots of very original minis with non original air in the tyres....it could become obsessive and compulsive. :?

Probably better to enjoy and conserve what you have, the Goodwood revival is a fine example of this...... in my humble opinion.
