HiF44 air filters options?

1330 A+ 276 cam, standard big bore MG Metro head, hi lift rockets.

Mini spares centre alloy inlet is quite deep and the HiF44 carb bit of a squeeze!

What options of air filter are there?
Standard MG metro...
KnN...

Anything not too bling?

I had a cone type K&N on my HIF44. It fits OK but the induction noise gets very tiring on a long drive. Also it is not easy to get a stub-stack to fit into a cone filter because of the offset backing plate. If I ever have a single HIF again I would have a standard airbox with a K&N filter.

You might want to ask GraemeC if he can dig out his K&N ram pipe.

I used to use the standard type big plastic one with a K&N. Might not look brilliant but works really well and you can run a cold air tube to the front.

Do you think the standard big plastic one would fit with the MSC manifold?

It is possible to get the original airbox to fit, it's just a tight squeeze under the scuttle panel. By the way, the MS manifold doesn't give any better flow than a stock Mainstream Cooper or MG Metro manifold.

I had one of the Minispares heated manifolds when I used the plastic filter, fitted ok. Not sure if the manifolds are still the same it was about 20 years ago.

There is also the offering from MED (same as ITG?). Comes with nicely made from billet stub stack which fits inside. This really does improve flow. Whole set up costs about £90.. Not bad when a K & N cone filter is about £80 without a decent stub stack.
Some people don't like the look of the foam filters though. Show or go?
Keith Calver did a few experiments with a K &N in the standard housing with a few holes drilled around the outer case. Had good results.
Possibly the best compromise?
But that Med stub stack is said to be worth about 4hp over the stock elbow. Vizard found similar results with a full radius stub stack.
Worst of all it seems is running any filter housing that just abuts the flat carb face with no radius at the carb entry.

This is a link to Calver's piece on the K&N Filter in a modified standard airbox. It looks like an HS4 and is an 1100 engine. Results were good but not tried on a large bore engine or HIF44 which would obviously require a lot more air.

I tired of the racket from the cone filter and went for this set up on my 1300 with HIF44 as it seemed a good compromise. Still running in but it is a bit quieter.

The pipe itself is a bit bent and dented and the filter, although original, probably needs replacing. The cast section that connects to the carb is the key part I guess.
