Clubman rod change gearbox
Advice please I have just overhauled my gearbox and am a bit concerned.?...? When checking that I can engage all gears prior to assembly, when I engage a forward gear you can turn the main shaft no problem but when you engage reverse it locks up until you use a slight force then it turns fine.? is this normal or will it be fine when rebuilt and installed when it’s idling sorry hard to explain hope you can understand what I am trying to explain thanks in advance

Re: Clubman rod change gearbox
Probably its tight as its not immersed in oil yet.
Once its full of oil and the oil has worked its way deep inside the gear clusters it will probably ease up.

Re: Clubman rod change gearbox
You have most probably some baulk ring binding the gear cone .
Is the mainshaft/pinion gear nut torqued up ? you should test the gearbox only once this is torqued ( no need for the final torque setting but enough only to bring the mainshaft in place against the double roller bearing.
Torque the mainshaft nut and check in neutral if all baulk rings are free/not binding on cone. If that is the case and you just get some slight initial binding when turning the box with reverse engaged should be fine. Otherwise the baulk rings may sit too high on the cone and lock the back against the Synchro hub.
Hope this helps
