Clearance between horn and solenoid
Is it normal to have almost no clearance between the horn and power feed to the solenoid? Maybe I got the horn bracket mounting studs in the wrong location?
The horn can swivel and almost touch the battery cable which is obviously not good!

Wrong way round button should be to the front/nearest the grille.

Re: Clearance between horn and solenoid
The solenoid is mounted correctly....the lug on the end of the battery cable should be a straight one rather then a 90 with a
boot covering it. It still only has about 1/2 inch of clearance between it and the horn.

Re: Clearance between horn and solenoid
Taken from the BMC Mini workshop manual. It was always in this position back then but awkward to use with left hand so many people shifted. it.

Re: Clearance between horn and solenoid
Thanks for the replies. I am pretty sure my solenoid is in the correct position for an S. I will just go with a straight connector for the battery cable to solenoid connection.
I guess it is just supposed to be really close then!

Re: Clearance between horn and solenoid
Was it rotated on the S to clear the oil cooler hose ?. Can't see any other reason for it to be different.

No, when the mk1 S was introduced with the servo fitted to the inner wing the large diameter heater intake fouled on the solenoid terminals and shorted out on the wire coil fitted inside the original tube. The factory solution was a different solenoid bracket.
The standard angled type bracket was still fitted to all other mk1's and Coopers

Just noticed the two-piece 'top hat' heater valve - not noticed that before??

That is a pre-production car.
Notice the angle of the thermostat housing and the spacer under the thermostat cover.
Also the the heater offtake plate is parallel with the centre line of the car not at 15 degrees like the production units.
Basically a big bore head with a small bore outer shape and size.
