Idler gear bearing remover .. wanted to borrow.

I fitted the 1st motion outer track this morning and the idler gear bearing.

Outer track in freezer overnight to cool it down. A little bit of gentle heat around the hole with a blow lamp and it tapped in nicely with a large socket.

Idler gear bearing area again gently warmed and then pressed the bearing in with a machined down clutch aligning dowel in Dads press ... easy.

Too much heat would certainly f*** the housing up. Just enough to do the job

I used exactly the same approach - aerosol freeze spray to contract the race, and a hot air gun to expand the case.

I’ve never had the idler needle bearing “fall out” with heat although it does make a puller work better. I always boil a kettle full of water and pour that around the bearing on both sides. You can get the benefit of the heat without the danger of overheating.

That is the exact kit I used before I found out that heat is your friend. It is sold in the states through the all to familiar Harbor Freight brand of cheap junk tools. You have the same sort of stuff in the UK I am sure....

I seem to recall that I had to lightly grind the flange on the expanding part of the mandrel in order to get it to fit in behind the bearing. A couple minutes on a bench grinder made it suitable.

It worked OK and is definitely inexpensive.
