Steering rack boot problems

Post by roymck »

My 63 Mini is giving my grief . Doing a disc brake conversion I stripped it all down and found the rack gaiters are perished . Doing the drivers side first I measured the boot at 4.5 inches so ordered a pair . Drivers side all fitted ok so looked at passenger side and the boot is different , the larger end has a smaller neck and the length is longer at 7.5 inches long . So ordered a pair of 7.5 inch boots but the neck size is too large . I have every reason to think the rack is the original fitment , so what’s going on ?
Did early racks have odd ends . Where can I get a correct boot from ?

I was supplied with a rack like that, from minispares maybe 8- 10 years ago. I haven't seen another one. later on I bought a boot kit in case it was needed, I still have it and have just checked it, I don't think it would fit. It was listed as GSV 1004.

I guess a fiat Punto or a Skoda Fabia one is very similar to that, passenger side if not sold in pairs.

The kit I have is one large and one small boot at the rack end. The problem will be the large boot is only very slightly longer that the small one. I hadn't looked in the box till yesterday.
