Fitting ‘S’ Welch/freeze/core plugs

Quick question:

I’m familiar with fitting the shallow domed Welch plugs. But on the S engine the AEH0592 are a pre-formed cup shape.

The domed type expand into the block to seal when peened with a hammer, but the S type seem to be pre-sized.

Are they supposed to be pressed in using the perimeter of the cup, or are they drifted in using the face of the cup?

Hope that makes sense...

I only have one set of 4 so no room to screw it up... any advice appreciated.

I've seen many drift them in by using a socket and extension bar, with the socket sized so it fits in the cup itself. While this appears to work OK, I've never been crazy about it.

I fit a large faced dolly that covers the whole plug, and tap them in that way. It can be a fiddle to get them started. I also apply a lick of loctite to them, not to hold them in any tighter, but to assist with sealing.

I've always used a tight fitting socket to fit them, I always cleaned the hole and in particular always payed extra attention to the starting point.

I had tried the socket on an extension method, but it wasn’t going in very square.

So I used my scrap ‘wrong distributor housing’ as a makeshift dolly, since it has a nice flat end and a round easy-to-hit end

All 4 went in flush no problem, with some Permatex gasket sealant on the circumference to seal them.
